Tooth Whitening

Tooth Whitening is a process where discolouration in your teeth is ‘whitened’ to a lighter shade. It removes the staining agent through chemical means. When performed by a dental professional, tooth whitening is a safe and simple procedure that can dramatically improve the appearance of teeth with minimal interventions.

Discoloration or yellowing of teeth can be caused by a number of elements including, tea, coffee red wine, smoking and unfortunately the natural aging process. Tooth whitening is a great option to give an instant improvement in appearance whilst being non invasive and fairly low cost. Unfortunately tooth whitening on its own is not suitable for everyone as it will not change the shade of crowns or fillings, if these are present at the front of the mouth then they may need to be changed to the new lighter shade after the procedure.

Once an initial consultation has taken place to assess suitability, three visits are required for this treatment. The first to take impressions to allow custom made whitening trays to be made by our laboratory. The second to fit the custom-made whitening trays, go through how to use the trays and care. Finally, a third appointment to assess the results.

There Are Two Major Advantages To The Tray System Over A Single Visit System:

  1. Once the treatment is complete, the trays are yours to keep. This means that if in the future you wish to top up the results you only need to purchase the whitening gel rather than begin the whole procedure from the beginning
  2. You are in control of the shade of your teeth, although we recommend the trays to be used for the full two week period, if you get the result you want before this point, you can simply stop using the trays and save the gels for a later date

A Word Of Warning!

One hour or “laser” tooth whitening performed by anyone who is not a dentist is illegal in the UK, a ban has been placed by the government until they find a way of policing the unqualified individuals such as beauticians offering whitening procedures. Due to the insufficient knowledge and training of non-dental professionals offering this treatment, whitening has been performed on unsuitable candidates, sometimes using products that can cause significant damage to tooth structure. This damage is may be permanent and irreparable.
